Untraceable Propaganda

So recently I saw the movie Untraceable. Let me say I have never seen a more prolific "Enforce the NET, Piracy is bad" propaganda Movie. It didn't even go about saying these things subtly. Be warned that this movie IS a large piece of propaganda and will likely be used to spread fear and pass legislation to alleviate that fear. I was highly surprised at how many people in the theater (80%) did not pick up on the propaganda in this movie, many of them left with comments containing "... the out of control Internet". Now i do not want to get into a technical debate (especially over such a inflammatory/inaccurate movie) but, yes if the government so wanted the killers website would be down in a matter of seconds if you want a technical explanation just look-up how DNS works. I only wish there was a way to keep a website up so that no-one could shut it down

[Major Spoilers]

Below is a list of scenes in the movie that I could pick out which were utterly over-the-top in their message in chronological order (the messages below may seem subtle, watch the movie to find out just how not subtle it is):

  • In the beginning of the movie the agent catches a guy who runs a download mp3 website... but of course the website steals information and credit info.
  • "Email from a friend of a friend" First person was caught trying to get cheap tickets. [Subtle message][Mild creepiness] Message: Do not buy tickets from anyone other than trusted authorities.
  • Dropping the body off in the trunk of a pro Net Neutrality congressman [Subtle message] [Highly creepy] Message: Ha-ha you'll never catch me because the net's so unregulated.
  • If you did nothing wrong you've got nothing to loose by letting us in... we can always come back with a warrant (Agent talking to a Gay movie downloader)
  • "(Cop)You like movies huh?... (Downloader)yea who doesn't...(Cop) me... burn your own copies?... you know that's illegal... (Federal copy-write notice appears) cant say they didn't warn you." Then later the cop says "Still felt good arresting him"
  • The kid gets a "Copy of a game" from a friend to put on her computer... game turns up to be a Trojan. [Subtle message - don't pirate software or else]
  • The email that gets the guy interested in some train-cars (Murderer ends up getting him)... [Subtle message - Its not safe to buy from people online]
  • "Any American who visits the site is an accomplice to murder" (Stated to TV cameras) - an insane mentality "Stockholm syndrome" when you start to accept the same rationale as your attacker... its not his fault that he's committing the murder, its the people who visit the site "No one thinks they did anything wrong, why should they they were only visiting a website... when did the world go so fucking insane"
  • The killer used a prepaid cell phone -[Subtle message - there should be a paper trail for everything]
  • The killer hacks agents onstar, then when he kidnaps her he disables it so the agents cant track it (Agents whine about how they could have tracked her if only her onstar was on) - [Subtle message - if only everyone could be tracked]
I suggest that everyone see/obtain (in the usual way) this movie to see just how much of an insult it is to everyone on the internet.

Thanx for stating the painfully obvious facts about this movie. I watched this flick and found the propaganda elements ridiculous to the degree that I found it enjoyable. I dont think people should stay away from this movie, but rather watch it, and use their brains and see it for what it is.

It is a pathetic attempt by the MPAA to swing public oppinion. The messages are supposed to be hidden. The 'story' of this movie is nothing but bad cover for the brainwashing that is attempted in the background.

This movie is an insult to the viewers intelligence.

I thought that no one, except for the most dull-witted, could not see this movie for what it is. I was looking forward to checking out the forums online, to hear from around the world that this is a pitiful attempt at brainwashing. Now I have lost yet another bit of faith in humanity, as (seemingly) Only Monarch has picked up on this fact.

The movie has gotten many bad reviews, but they all miss the point entirely. It is unbelivable that "reviewers" would go at this movie for its crappy story, bad dialog etc. The people behind this movie do not care if the movie is a box office flop. They just want to flash a story in front of the viewer, so they can put in the "hidden" brainwash elements.
sigh. World, wake up!

so, Monarch, thumbs up for you, and shame on every person who has reviewed this movie and not seen the obvious.

Great post. You even caught some subtle pieces of propaganda that I missed. I disliked the utter contempt in the woman's voice as she was whining about net neutrality, "they think that all traffic should have the same priority", as though it would be the worst thing to ever happen. I also was bugged by the overdone, and unnecessary "piracy=bad" plug by the FBI people, as though to say it's not bad enough that he's killing people, but he's also a pirate! *gasp*

I just saw this movie. I'm so relieved that there are other people who see this INSANE propaganda film.

I'm PROUD to say that I downloaded and burned this wonderful anti-piracy propaganda film... There are definitely more than just the anti-piracy bits. I was watching a documentary recently of military involvement in hollywood movies (basically... hey we'll let you use all of our sexy technology to make your movie higher budget without costing you a cent... just let us....comb over the script a bit with our people in return. I wouldn't be surprised if there were some US intelligence also involved with this.

The moral of this movie... freedom, and unregulated free speech will cause people to harm you, unless the valiant heros in the FBI (or any police for that matter) are able to bypass the bill of rights in order to save us from ourselves.

Notice how it is endlessly repeated that all who go to this site are murderers. That's a little mind game for people to go...oh my god...would I go there? Would the guy next to me? We're all crazy...we need to be saved from our savage selves by the level headed, heros in the US intelligence community.

Another point of propaganda is the explanation of why this person is killing people... because of a video on the internet. It's like that old bit of bullshit trying to claim that if entertainment isn't strictly censored, our children will become desensitized psychopaths.

Shame on anyone who put their work into, agreed to appear in this filth...

this will no doubt be the new reefer madness, or perversion for profit in a few generations.
